Course Details

You will have the chance to learn a great deal about aspects of the past that you have not encountered before, as well as deepening your knowledge of things you are already familiar with. Modern History students study the political, social and economic aspects of The British Empire, 1857 to 1967 and Communist Russia from 1917-1953. Students are also given the opportunity to go on study visits to London and Russia.

Year 1:
Module 1: Communist Russia 1917-1929
Module 2: The British Empire 1857-1914

Year 2:
Module 3: Communist Russia 1929-1953
Module 4: The British Empire, 1914-1967
Module 5: Personal Study

Entry requirements

The College gives priority to its 11 partner schools. Places are offered to other applicants on a competitive basis.

All prospective students must achieve a minimum of grade 4 in GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics, and a minimum of grade 6 in three GCSE subjects.

To study History, students must achieve a minimum of grade 5 at GCSE History (if taken) or grade 5 in English Language

Historians are trained in clear thinking, diligence and the ability to understand people and situations in the world at large. Employers are well aware of the versatility of historians. There are numerous careers where history is an important qualification including such professions as Accountancy, Librarianship, Banking and Commerce, Law, Publishing, Museums and Art Galleries and a wide variety of social work. Many historians also enter the business world through management training schemes operated by national companies in retailing, marketing and selling, computing and personnel work. Others go into administrative careers in the civil and local government services as well as in the private sector.
