Course Summary

The new ‘Core Maths’ qualification (also known as Mathematical Studies) is designed to better prepare students for the mathematical demands of study, employment and life. It will maintain and develop real-life mathematical skills and is for students who have passed GCSE Mathematics at Level 5 or above but have decided not to study A Level Mathematics. It focuses on using and applying mathematics to solve problems relevant to everyday lives. It will also help with other A Level subjects – in particular with Science, Geography, Business Studies, Psychology and Economics.

Course Details

The content covers the analysis of data (data collection, calculation of statistics such as mean and standard deviation, statistical diagrams), personal finance, estimation, critical analysis and use of spreadsheets.

How will it be delivered?

The course will be studied for one year only and examined at the end of the first year.

Entry requirements

The College gives priority to its 11 partner schools. Places are offered to other applicants on a competitive basis.

All prospective students must achieve a minimum of GCSE grade 4 in GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics, and a minimum of grade 6 in three GCSE subjects.

Prospective Mathematical Studies students must have achieved a grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.
