During the first few weeks of the course, students are encouraged to consider and discuss complex ideas surrounding the purpose and value of Art and Design, to express views about contemporary culture and to get involved in a diversity of practical activities aiming to advance their understanding of a variety of media.
Students will draw, paint, print, make collage and work in three dimensions. They will use cameras in a creative way and have a thorough introduction to the use of apple mac computers, creative sewing machine techniques as well as various other methods and processes.
The induction programme forms a substantial part of Year 1 of the course. From then on we put the onus for learning onto the student, emphasising the importance of self-directed learning and personal development. Individual students are given the opportunity to generate their own ideas and to establish working methods based on sound practical starting points.
The student’s own practice is put into context with a course of Art history and theory with the main emphasis on contemporary art and culture.
There is an assessed written component in the second year of the course.
You will follow the Pearson Art, Craft and Design syllabus.
The A Level qualification consists of two areas of assessment: Personal Investigation (including a written component) and an externally set assignment (leading to a timed examination) which are internally marked and externally moderated.
The College gives priority to its 11 partner schools. Places are offered to other applicants on a competitive basis.
All prospective students must achieve a minimum of grade 4 in GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics, and a minimum of grade 6 in three GCSE subjects.
Other than the College's general entry requirements there are no additional qualifications needed to study Art and Design, although the best foundation for success in A Level Art is a good grade at GCSE. However, if you are creative or have an aptitude for the subject, you may have the basic skills to succeed. To be successful in A Level Art and Design you should be prepared to work hard at developing your work. You should have an interest in creating and understanding art and the determination to develop that interest.
This course is essential for those students wishing to undertake further studies in art, craft and design-related subjects.
