If you want to build a career or improve your skills in bricklaying or masonry work, this course is for you.
The structure of the course combines practical workshops and valuable theory which provides the underpinning knowledge required to increase your quality of work and performance.
You will study 6 mandatory units:
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to carry out safe working practices in construction to:
- Sourcing relevant safety information and using the relevant safety procedures at work.

  • Understanding information, quantities and communication with others
The aim of this unit is to you with the knowledge to be deemed trained to interpret information, determine quantities and communicate with other in relation to:
- interpreting information including drawings.
- estimating quantities of resources from drawings and specifications.
- communicating effectively to all levels of the construction team.

  • Understanding construction technology
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge of building methods and construction technology in relation to understanding the principle of:
- foundation construction.
- floor construction.
- wall construction.
- roof construction.
- supply of utilities and services.
- sustainability within construction.

  • Set out masonry structures
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to set out masonry structures in relation to:
- interpreting information and preparing for setting out activities
- setting out regular shaped masonry structures on level ground.

  • Construct solid walling incorporating isolated and attached piers
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to construct solid walling incorporating piers and arches in relation to:
- selecting materials, components, tools and equipment
- constructing solid walls incorporating isolated and attached piers and arches.

  • Construct cavity walling forming masonry structures
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to select materials, components, tools and equipment and construct cavity walling forming masonry structures.

You will study 1 of 2 optional units:
  • Construct masonry cladding
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to construct masonry cladding in relation to:
- selecting materials, components, tools and equipment
- applying masonry cladding to timber, steel and concrete framed buildings.

  • Construct thin joint masonry
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be deemed trained to construct thin joint masonry in relation to:
- selecting materials, components, tools and equipment
- constructing walls using thin joint methods.

The course also offers integrated literacy and numeracy within the knowledge delivery element.

How will it be delivered?

You will be assessed throughout the course, including practical synopsis assessment and a global online assessment (GOLA) test towards the end of the course.

Entry requirements

•A level 1 brickwork qualification, or

•A minimum of GCSE English and Maths (one at grade 4 above and one at grade 3 or above) or equivalent.

Your next steps...

You can undertake an apprenticeship in brickwork on completion of this course.
