Overview

The aim of this course is to prepare you to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years. It prepares you to progress to the level 3 qualification which will grant you full professional status.

Details

You will study 14 mandatory units:

Support physical care routines for children
This unit provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to support children’s physical care as part of a healthy lifestyle.

An introduction to the role of the early years practitioner
Understand the role of the early years practitioner; be able to communicate to meet individuals’ needs and preferences; understand working relationships in early years; understand why Continuing Professional Development is integral to the role of the early years practitioner

Understand how to work in partnership
Identify reasons for working in partnership; explain the roles of others involved in partnership working; identify barriers to partnership working

Understand legislation relating to the safeguarding, protection and welfare of children
Understand legislation and guidelines for the safeguarding, protection and welfare of children; understand policies and procedures for the safeguarding, protection and welfare of children; understand how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child has been abused or harmed

Use legislation relating to the health and safety of children
Understand legislation and guidelines for health and safety; understand policies and procedures for health and safety; be able to identify hazards in an early years environment; be able to manage risk within an early years environment; understand how to identify and record accidents, incidents and emergencies

Use legislation relating to equality, diversity and inclusive practice
Understand how legislation and codes of practice inform equality, diversity and inclusive practice; understand how policies and procedures inform equality, diversity and inclusive practice; know how to access information, advice and support about equality, diversity and inclusion; be able to work in ways which support equality, diversity and inclusive practice

Understand how to plan to meet the needs of the developing child
Understand approaches to planning when working with children from birth to 7 years; understand how to plan to meet the needs of children

Supporting children’s play
Understand the play environment; understand how the early years practitioner supports children’s behaviour and socialisation within play environments; be able to support children’s behaviour and socialisation within play environments; be able to create an enabling play environment which meets the age, stage and needs of children

Support children's play in early years
Understand the role of play in children’s development; understand children’s rights in relation to play; understand how children play during different stages of development; be able to support different types of play for children

Support the needs of the child in preparing for school
Understand ‘school readiness’ in relation to the role of the early years practitioner; understand how working in partnership with others contributes to children’s school readiness; be able to support children’s language and communication needs in preparation for school readiness; be able to support children’s mathematical development in preparation for school readiness

Supporting children's development
Understand the stages of child development from birth to 7 years; understand influences on children’s development; understand the needs of children during transition

Use observation, assessment and planning
Understand the role of observation when working with children; be able to use observation methods

• Support children’s positive behaviour
Understand policies and procedures relating to children’s positive behaviour; be able to support positive behaviour; be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour; be able to reflect on your own role in relation to managing children’s behaviour in own setting

Engage in professional development
Understand professional development; be able to use reflective practice to contribute to own personal and professional development

And 2 of the following 4 optional units:
• Support healthy lifestyles for children through the provision of food and nutrition
• Support healthy lifestyles for children through exercise
• Support children with additional needs
• Support creative play

How will it be delivered?

You will be continually assessed through written assignments and an external exam.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with the following grades: 
  • English at 3 or above and Maths at 2 or above, and
  • two other GCSEs at 3 or above
A satisfactory interview. You will need to show that you:

  • are committed to the course and that you aim to improve your literacy and numeracy skills as you study,
  • have good school reports for attendance, punctuality and behaviour,
  • where possible, have evidence of previous experience of working with or caring for children, for example, voluntary groups or work experience

You will need to have a DBS check (formerly CRB) which the college will pay for.

Your next steps...

This course will enable you to progress to the level 3 National Diploma which, combined with GCSEs grade 4 in English and maths, will grant you full, professional Early Years Educator status.
