Overview

There are many ways of working with animals. This course provides experience of working with and caring for a range of animals.  Most of the practical activities take place at Wakefield College‚Äôs animal unit, supported by basic background theory, but there will also be visits and field trips to access a larger variety of animals.

There are progression opportunities onto either a Level 2 Practical Animal Skills Certificate or a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care at Wakefield College.

The course is made up of 7 Units delivered over 1 year

These are made up of:

  • Practical experience of handling, feeding, accommodating and caring for a range of animals
  • Learning skills to work in the animal care industry including teamwork, completion of tasks using the correct equipment and independence and intuitive  when working with animals
  • Understanding terminology relating to classifying animals
    Introduction to wildlife

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C (9-1) in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C (9-1)   This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study

How will it be delivered?

There are 2 online, multiple choice tests for the Health and Safety unit and Preparing to work in the land-based industries.  The remaining units will have observed or written assessments. These could be in the form of posters, leaflets, completing assignment tasks or answering questions.
