Overview

Why study Art?

An understanding of the visual world is not only enriching, it also allows you to communicate with others in a variety of creative ways. It allows for personal expression, the development of skills and ideas and the potential to produce an exciting and meaningful outcome.

Throughout this course you will experiment with a wide range of art materials and techniques.

You will explore and refine your creative ideas, developing them as you work to ensure that they develop and conclude in achieving a professional standard. Your practical investigations will be supported by research into artists, crafts persons and designers from a variety of cultures and eras.

You will gain additional historic knowledge, cement your understanding of the importance and relevance of art throughout history and the context in which the artwork is created. Throughout this process you will consider formal elements such as form, texture, pattern, proportion, line, composition shape and more.

Details

A Level Art: An A Level in Art and Design give students the opportunity to explore, experiment, develop, refine and express within their creative studies.   

Component 1 – Personal Investigation:

Throughout this first component, students are expected to refine their skills and explore an area of art study that they are personally interested in and inspired by. This creative exploration gives the opportunity for extensive study and to evidence growth in both skills and the generation of creative ideas. This creative study is supported by a written element of 1000-3000 words.   

This element has no specified time limit and makes up 60% of the course assessment.

Component 2 – Externally Set Assignment:

Throughout this element, students will respond to an externally set assignment (by the exam board). They will choose from a selection of 8 questions as starting points to their own investigations. 

The preparation time for this element is only by the time available, but culminates in a 15 hour controlled test. It makes up 40% of the course assessment.

Entry requirements

The aim of our entry criteria policy is to ensure students are taking courses they are well suited to and are able to make progress in. We seek to provide courses well matched to the needs of our students, helping them to follow their chosen progression pathway.

Our main College entry requirements are as follows;

Entry Requirements

A minimum of five 9-4 grades at GCSE, including English and Maths (at least to Level 4) from five different subject areas.

Purely vocational pathway require a minimum of four 9-4 grades at GCSE, including English and Maths (at least to Level 4) from four different subject areas.

There will be three pathways which students can follow based on an average grade produced from their seven best GCSE results. The calculation being used for this van be seen overleaf.
